Dr. Silberman, who practices family medicine at Saint Thomas Health, a part of Ascension, says a flu shot is a must for anyone older than 6 months. "It covers the strains that are predicted to be the most prevalent that particular year", said Silberman.
CDC conducts studies each year to determine how well the flu vaccine protects against flu illness. While vaccine effectiveness can vary, recent studies show vaccine reduces the risk of flu illness by about 50%-60% among the overall population during seasons when most circulating flu viruses are like the vaccine viruses according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year, the CDC is not recommending the nasal spray vaccine showing it's not as effective in preventing the flu.
