The Dispensary of Hope has distributed more than $2.2 million monthly in medications to the low-income, uninsured living in the United States, a number that will more than quadruple by 2020.  The need is great and that’s why the non-profit organization, which is part of the mission of Ascension and Saint Thomas Health, is moving into a larger building in North Nashville which will have space with four times the capacity to serve the poor.   The Dispensary of Hope, a domestic charitable pharmaceutical distributor (www.dispensaryofhope.org), is moving from Metro Center to its new location off Brick Church Pike in order to have adequate space for more donations and staff.

Ascension’s President of Healthcare Operations and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Patricia Maryland and Saint Thomas Health’s President and Chief Executive Officer Karen Springer joined U.S. Congressman Marsha Blackburn for a dedication and invocation held this morning to celebrate the new location.

“We’re here today to celebrate a collaboration among a number of organizations who have committed to work together for the benefit of the poor and those who are suffering,” said Karen Springer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Thomas Health.  “As part of Ascension, Saint Thomas Health is committed to expanding access to care – including medications – to all who need it.  It’s not acceptable when people in our community must choose between medication and food or rent and the Dispensary of Hope is helping thousands of people across our country get free medications.  Saint Thomas Health is proud to be the home of the Dispensary which is now a national dispensing organization.  We’re extremely grateful to those organizations who support us in this effort.”

The Dispensary of Hope, which began in Middle Tennessee in 2003 under the direction of Ascension and Saint Thomas Health, now serves 24 states.  The program works with many of the nation’s largest and most respected healthcare organizations and pharmaceutical manufacturers.  The medications are donated all through the generosity of the pharmaceutical supply chain and safety net dispensing site partners.  The partners include generic drug manufacturers who have generously donated medications for years to serve those with the most need.  Because medication is distributed weekly by the Dispensary of Hope clinics and pharmacies, the medication is available in real time when the patient needs it.
